Guide how to get Digital Nomad Visa in 3 easy steps
I wish I had read an article like this before I moved to Spain.
In February 2024, I landed in Valencia under the shiny new Digital Nomad Visa — the so-called Teleworker Permit. I had my company registered in Estonia, steady consulting work with global clients, and years of legal residence in the EU. On paper, I was the perfect candidate.
But what unfolded over the next year was not the Mediterranean dream I imagined. It was a maze of red tape, hidden costs, and financial traps. And it’s why I now call this visa one of the most misleading programs I’ve ever encountered.
If you’re thinking of applying, read this carefully.
The Loop That Costs You Thousands
The first thing Spain asks for is proof of accommodation. Fine, I thought. But to rent a flat, landlords demanded a NIE (foreigner ID number). And here’s the kicker: you can’t get a NIE until you apply for the visa.
That catch-22 forced me into the hands of agencies that would even consider someone like me. The cost?
1 month’s rent upfront
1 month’s deposit
1 “guarantee” month
1 month’s agency fee
Four months of rent, gone before I even turned the key.
And that was just the start. Add in sworn translations of every document (mandatory), and paying a third-party company to file the application on my behalf (because you can’t do it yourself without a NIE), and the bills stacked up fast.
